The first real assignment during fall semester was to create Fire Flowers of steel. And, what did "Fire Flower" mean, in this case? Well, we were supposed to design at least one flower that would glow in the dark or reflect light in some exciting way.
I was so enthusiastic and full of energy from the very beginning! I started by doodling all kinds of flowers, and soon got the idea of making steel poppies (Papaver).
After that, it was time to start cutting steel. I desided to make three fowers: one flower in full bloom and two hollow seedcases. It was, I must admit, quite difficult for me to estimate the amount of material needed in this project. It took some time and experiments to make it work.
I was excited to get the opportunity to weld for the first time in my life. I found it difficult at first, but after practicing for a while it got a little easier. I still think it's challenging, but I'm sure I'll get use to it; the heat, the mask, the sparkles etc.
Part of the assignment, as a group, was to create a "magical forest", an exhibition space, for our flowers. With black fabrick, LED lights, moss and buckets full of sand we were able to slap together a showroom with a touch of fairy magic.
I really enjoyed this project, and learned a lot! I'm already dreaming of creating a huge forest of steel with flowers, different plants, trees, bears and foxes and rabbits and, and, and...
